Why Spay or Neuter your pet?

Neutering for dogs and cats

A neuter is a routine surgical procedure done in order to make an animal sterile through the removal of their testicles. The removal of the testicles also decreases testosterone levels, which results in the reduction in unwanted behaviours and health issues in the animal.

Unneutered pets have the tendency to become more aggressive, engage in fights, mount furniture and people, mark their territory indoors and break free from your home in search of a mate. Neutering your pet will prevent many of these undesirable behaviours – especially if your pet is neutered early enough that the behaviour doesn’t become a learnt behaviour.

Dogs are capable of breeding as early as six months, while cats begin to breed as early as four months.

Spaying for dogs and cats

A spay is a routine, elective sterilisation surgery for female pets. This means your female pet won’t be able to produce litters of unwanted puppies or kittens. Additionally, spaying affects some of the hormones in your pet’s body, especially related to their reproductive cycle. Therefore, spayed pets are usually calmer and less prone to certain health risks.

What is a spay? A spay is the surgical removal of the ovaries and uterus. Removing the uterus alone wouldn’t result in the same health and behavioural benefits. Therefore, the hormonal influence of the ovaries must be addressed as well.

Early spaying will eliminate heat cycles, reduce bad behaviour and protect against various health problems later on in life. Problems such as certain types of cancer or potentially fatal infections in the uterus.
